Pearl is the oldest known gem and was considered the most valuable for centuries. It has a colour ranging from white to black including silver, cream, pink, champagne, (gold) green, and blue.
What distinguishes pearl from other gemstones is that it is organic matter derived from a living creature - oysters and molluscs. Its chemical structure contains calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. As it is a natural organic gem, it may occur in many shapes and each shape is quite unique. Like every diamond is different from each other, every pearl has a slight difference in its shape. Its shape is due to its nucleus and positioning within the mollusc. Round pearls are the one which are mostly desired and prized since they are rare and ‘natural’. When one thinks of a pearl, it is a round pearl that comes to mind. In addition to natural pearls, there are also cultured pearls which are farmed from oysters and freshwater mussels. The value of a pearl depends on many factors such as the type of pearl, its lustre, shape, colour, nacre and size. Its lustre shows its quality; a high quality pearl is so bright and shiny that you are able to see your reflection upon it. Another point is the nacre which gives a pearl its colour and shine of its lustre. The most valuable pearl is the one with thicker nacre.
Pearls are the world's oldest, most sought-after and most revered gems since they were first discovered. It was mentioned in the legends, texts; used in art pieces of many countries from Egypt to China and to Greece. Its first usage was dated to about 5,200 years ago in Egypt. The examples of pearls could be seen in the paintings and sculptures in ancient Egypt era. In Chinese lobes and historical texts dated 4,000 years ago, it was mentioned about freshwater pearls and it is still accepted as the definition of freshwater pearls. And the oldest piece of pearl jewellery is a 2,700-year-old necklace which was found in a Queen's tomb of ancient Persia. It is known as the Susa necklace, containing 3 rows of 72 pearls each. Being called as the teardrops of the moon, pearl is the June birthstone and the stone for the zodiac sign Cancer.
